What Can I Expect During My First Class?

Once you schedule your first class, the hard part is over! Give yourself a congratulatory pat on the back, and then get yourself prepared. We know it can be a bit nerve-racking going to a new gym for the first time, so let’s walk through what you might be able to anticipate when you walk through the doors.

First and foremost, try to arrive at your first session at least 15 minutes early. This gives you plenty of time to get to know your instructor, who can then show you around the beautiful facilities before you get started. Also, like any other gym, you can expect to sign a little bit of paperwork upon arrival, just for your own peace of mind!

After the introductory stuff is out of the way, your instructor will show you how to properly use the necessary equipment.

What Equipment Will I Need?

Even though this isn’t a competitive boxing gym, meaning you won’t be fighting against other real opponents, you still need to make sure you’re taking some precautions to ensure your safety. 

First things first, your instructor will teach you how to properly use hand wraps. Hand wraps look like soft bandages that wrap around your palms and knuckles. Those punching bags are harder than you might think, so these help to provide necessary protection for those high impact workouts. Your boxing gym will have some hand wraps on deck, but you may want to get your own just to be safe!

Another tool that’s just as necessary and even more recognizable are those boxing gloves. Similar to the hand wraps, boxing gloves give you a ton of cushion to further protect your knuckles from damage. If you were playing competitive boxing, these would also help protect your opponent’s face from blunt force damage.

The boxing gym will have its own gloves that you can borrow, and this is totally fine for your first few sessions. But since these are communal gloves, they’ll wear down over time. Investing in your own set might be a good idea, and you could even choose a color or style that really reflects your personality!

Last but not least, you’ll need a good pair of boxing shoes. Boxing shoes are a necessity for being able to properly execute punches, as it will help keep your feet planted firmly on the ground. Professional boxing shoes can be expensive, so just make sure you have a nice pair of cross trainers to get a similar amount of support.

Basic Boxing Moves

Once your hands are wrapped and your gloves are on, you’ll be ready to learn some basic boxing moves. This will give you a good foundation for future Legends Boxing classes.

There are four basic punches in boxing:

  • Jab: This is the most basic punch, involving a straight, quick punch forward. Although it lacks the power that other punches have, it can easily catch an opponent off guard.
  • Hook: These really pack a punch. Coming in from a side angle, these are tough to defend against. They’re a bit slow, but landing one of these could win you the match.
  • Uppercut: Similar to a hook, this is a powerful punch that comes in from a low angle, usually meant to hit an opponent’s chin. Mike Tyson had a particularly nasty one!
  • Cross: This might be the strongest punch of them all. It comes from your dominant hand and gets extra leverage from your back muscles.

Get Ready For a Full-Body Workout

One of the great things about Legends Boxing is that every single class is completely unique, meaning you’ll never do the same workout twice. This eliminates the repetitiveness of the gym while still providing you with a quality workout.

But one thing that will stay the same every single time you come is that you will experience a full-body workout. Even though boxing is in the name, each class will incorporate other strength and conditioning exercises to help tone your muscles all over the body. You might do push-ups, crunches, lunges, heavy bag training, kickboxing, and more!

Fitness boxing utilizes HIIT, which stands for High Intensity Interval Training. It combines periods of intense physical activity with periods of rest. Researchers have found that this type of workout makes your heart work at 80% of its maximum capacity, making it the most well established cardio-conditioning activity to benefit your heart’s health.
